Our History

St. Joseph’s is an all- girls Secondary School, founded by the Sisters of Mercy.
It is situated in the centre of Castlebar, built on the historical grounds of the former Lord Lucan.
In January 1845, the P.P. Fr. Gibbons, with a view to bringing the Sisters of Mercy to the town, convened a public meeting in the local parish church.

TY Cultural Tour - Rhineland, Germany Thursday (Day One) Our Transition year students departed from Dublin Airport with Aer Lingus to the Rhineland Germany an area renowned for its well-preserved medieval towns, castles and hilltops. Students enjoyed a cruise on the River Rhine along the historic banks of Cologne City before enjoying a delicious German meal in our hotel in a picturesque village south of Koblenz. Sincere thanks to all our teachers who have accompanied them.

Congratulations to Molly Pittendrigh, 5th year Music student, who has qualified for the finals of Siansa Gael Linn, one of the country’s most prestigious competitions for young traditional Irish music and singing groups. Molly and her group ‘Luasc’ will perform in the National Concert Hall on April 14th and they are the only group from the west of Ireland to make it through to the finals. Multi instrumentalist and composer Stephen Doherty who facilitated workshops with our musicians again this year in St Joseph’s, is also the mentor of this talented bunch! The competition will be broadcast on Radio na Gaeltachta at 7.30 p.m. for anyone who wants to tune in and enjoy a night of music and song. Best of luck to Molly, Stephen and all the members of Luasc on this fantastic achievement! 🎶🎻🪗🪕

Bhronn an tAire Oideachais teastas ar Niamh Ní Riáin le deanaí mar gheall go raibh ceann de na haistí is fearr scríofa aici i scrúdú Ardléibhéal Gaeilge na hArdteiste. Mhol sí an ardchaighdeán a bhí aici ó thaobh cruinnis agus úsaid na Gaeilge agus leagadh béim ar leith ar líofacht stíle agus comhréire a bhí aici. Is éacht iontach é seo agus táimid fíor bhrodúil aisti. Go n-éirí go geal leat leis an nGaeilge amach anseo Niamh.   Niamh Ryan, Leaving Cert class 2023 recently received a certificate from the Minister of Education in recognition for her outstanding performance in the essay writing in her leaving cert Irish exam. Niamh was among four students in the country to achieve this award . Niamh was commended for her writing style and her natural ability in the use of the Irish language in her essay. Niamh is pictured here with her teacher Ms Niamh Sweeney and school principal Peadar Ó Tuathail. Well done to Niamh on this amazing achievement.

Congratulations to our u14 Navy team who beat St. Mary’s Secondary School, Ballina to qualify for the Connacht Semi Final today. 👏🏻 The team got off to a flying start with 4 goals in the first 20 minutes and did well to hold the lead against a very strong St. Mary’s side.  They look forward to the next stage of the competition after Easter. Young Social Innovator Speakouts We would like to congratulate all of our TY's on all their fabulous YSI Speakouts on Wednesday last week in Sligo. The effort and enthusiasm was fantastic!   There were three separate projects this year: 'Kids these days', which focused on active games without technology, 'Treasure don't pressure', which looked at the idea of peer pressure, and 'Rethink the pink', which centred on the issue of women's products and why women have to pay more than men.   Well done to all the girls and thank you to Mr Fahey and Ms O'Toole for accompanying us.   Ms Keaveney

All Things Irish, a celebration of St Patrick's weekend took place in St Joseph's yesterday. Music, history, song and dance combined in a wonderful display of creative ability. Our Gospel Choir and Trad Group under the directorship of Ms Aoife Durcan, presented a beautiful selection of Irish airs and song. This bilingual celebration was overseen by our amazing 5th Year students, guided by Ms Niamh Sweeney and Ms Caroline Berkeley. Two of our 1st Yr pupils danced a traditional reel. Mr Mathew Durcan provided social media advice and oversaw St Joseph's first live Instagram stream. Our national flag was raised by our Principal, Peader Ó Tuathail.  It was a wonderful event enjoyed by senior students, staff and Instagram viewers.  Happy St Patrick's Day everyone!
